Investigating Gene Function Flashcards
1
Q
What is Reverse Genetics?
A
Reverse genetics is a targeted approach to investigating gene function. It aims to determine the phenotype that results from mutating a chosen gene.
2
Q
What is Forward Genetics?
A
It is a random process that aims to identify mutation(s) that produce a particular phenotype. The mutant gene can then be isolated and characterised.
3
Q
What are the three benefits of using bacteria in investigation gene function?
A
Most bacteria is well genetically characterised, they have a rapid generation time and their genes can be easily manipulated using vectors.
