Invertebrates - Intro & Porifera Flashcards
what are invertebrates?
-animals that lack a backbone
-believed to account for 95% of all animal species
what are the characteristics of the phylum porifera?
-asymmetrical sponges
-suspension feeders with no true tissues
-found in marine and fresh waters, sessile
how do poriferas feed?
-water moves in through porocytes [small muscular cell openings], and food particles in the water are collected
what are the 3 types of porifera cells?
choanocytes - collar cells
amoebocytes - transport nutrients, make spicules, can become any type of cell
spicules - make skeletal fibers
how do poriferas reproduce and what type of sexual reproduction do they use?
-can reproduce sexually by releasing spores
-can reproduce asexually by budding
-most sponges are hermaphroditic: produces male and female gametes
what invertebrate phyla are acoelomate?
platyhelminthes
cnidaria
porifera
what invertebrate phyla are coelomate?
molluscs
chordates
annelids
echidnoderms
which invertebrate phyla are pseudocoelomate?
nematoda
rotifera
