Invertebrates Flashcards
An animal that does not have a backbone.
Invertebrate
A mass of nerve cells
Ganglion
The digestive tract
Gut
A body cavity that contains the internal organs.
Coelom
A circulatory system in which the circulatory fluid is not contained entirely within vessels.
Open circulatory system.
A circulatory system in which the heart circulates blood through a network of blood vessels that form a closed loop.
Closed circulatory
A hard, external, supporting structure.
Exoskeleton.
An eye composed of many light detectors.
Compound Eye
A feeler that is on the head of an invertebrate, such as a crustacean or an insect, that senses touch, taste, or smell.
Antenna
A phase in the life cycle of many animals during which rapid change from the immature form of an organism to the adult form.
Metamorphosis
An internal skeleton made of bone or cartilage.
Endoskeleton
A system of canals filled with a watery fluid that circulates throughout the body of an echinoderm.
Water Vascular System
An animal that has a backbone.
Vertebrate
An organism that eats other organisms or organic matter.
Consumer
The symmetry an animal has that allows it to be equally divided into two halves.
Bilateral Symmetry
Symmetry around a single point where the image is repeated around it.
Radial Symmetry
No symmetry at all.
Asymmetry
An aquatic invertebrate that doesn’t move it filter feeds. Asymmetry.
Sponge
A radial symmetrical body, and can sting. Jellyfish
Cnidarians
Simple worms, that are flat and have bilateral symmetry.
Flatworms
Long, round and slim worms, Bilateral symmetry.
RoundWorms
Octopuses, and Squid.
Mollusks
Worms that have segments that repeat.
Annelid Worms
any part of a larger structure, such as the body of an organism, that is set off by natural or abritrary boundaries.
