Invertebrate Animal Vocabulary Flashcards
Vertebrates
an animal of a large group distinguished by the possession of a backbone or spinal column, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes
Invertebrates
an animal lacking a backbone, such as an arthropod, mollusk, annelid, coelenterate, etc.
Consumer
A consumer is a person or a group who intends to order, orders, or uses purchased goods, products, or services primarily for personal, social, family, household and similar needs.
Ganglion
A ganglion is a group of neuron cell bodies in the peripheral nervous system.
Gut
the stomach or belly
Coelom
the body cavity in metazoans, located between the intestinal canal and the body wall.
Bilateral Symmetry
symmetry in which similar anatomical parts are arranged on opposite sides of a median axis so that only one plane .
Radial Symmetry
Radial symmetry is a symmetry in which the sides exhibit correspondence or regularity of parts around a central axis. It is lacking left and right sides.
Asymmetry
lack of equality or equivalence between parts or aspects of something; lack of symmetry.
Sponges
a primitive sedentary aquatic invertebrate with a soft porous body that is typically supported by a framework of fibers or calcareous or glassy spicules.
Cnidarians
an aquatic invertebrate animal of the phylum Cnidaria, which comprises the coelenterates.
Flatworms
a worm of a phylum which includes the planarians together with the parasitic flukes and tapeworms.
Roundworms
a nematode, especially a parasitic one found in the intestines of mammals.
Mollusks
an invertebrate of a large phylum which includes snails, slugs, mussels, and octopuses.
Open circulatory system
An open circulatory system describes a system where blood and interstitial fluid are allowed to mix in an organism.
Closed circulatory system
Closed circulatory systems (evolved in echinoderms and vertebrates) have the blood closed at all times within vessels of different size and wall thickness.
Annelid worms
The annelids, also known as the ringed worms or segmented worms, are a large phylum, with over 22,000 extant species including ragworms, earthworms, and leeches.
Exoskeleton
exoskeleton, rigid or articulated envelope that supports and protects the soft tissues of certain animals.
Compound eye
a stroke caused by small infarctions resulting from obstruction of small arterioles branching directly off large vessels in the brain.///////////////
Antenna
either of a pair of long, thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects, crustaceans, and some other arthropods.
Metamorphosis
(in an insect or amphibian) the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
Endoskeleton
an internal skeleton, such as the bony or cartilaginous skeleton of vertebrates.
Water vascular system
a system of canals in echinoderms containing a circulating watery fluid that is used for the movement of the tentacles and tube feet.
