A
low, intermittent
A Levin tube has no air vent, and the suction must be placed on a low and intermittent setting to prevent trauma to the gastric mucosa. A Salem sump tube allows for continuous suction because of the presence of an air vent on that tube. Low suction pressure is safer for the stomach than high pressure.
