Endocrinology
The study of endocrine glands and their hormonal products, which are released directly into the bloodstream
Endocrine gland
A group of cells which secrete “messenger” molecules directly into the bloodstream.
Hormone
The bioactive “messenger” molecule secreted by an endocrine gland into the blood - i.e. not simply a metabolite or energy substrate.
The endocrine system
The endocrine system is comprised of the endocrine glands and their hormonal products, and is often
also used to describe the cells which respond to these hormones.
Endocrine hormone
Acts on a target at a distance from the source
Paracrine hormone
Acts on nearby target cells
Autocrine hormone
Acts on it’s self as an immediate source
