What are the three aims of administering First Aid?
Preserve life, prevent conditions worsening, promote recovery
What are the UK emergency numbers?
999 - any emergency
112 - medical emergency
111 - NHS guidance
When should an ambulance be called?
An ambulance must be called immediately if:
- you determine that approaching the casualty would put your life at risk
- you identify that the casualty has a severe injury (in primary survey)
- the casualty is unresponsive and not breathing normally
- the casualty has injuries that need urgent medical attention (after secondary survey)
What must employees provide at work?
- A suitably stocked First Aid kit
- An appointed person to maintain facilities
What might you need for high risk workplaces/areas?
- More first aiders
- Training specific to the risks
What does the HSE advise is kept in any first aid record?
- Date/time/place of accident
- Name and role of injured person
- Details of injury and first aid given
- Details about aftermath

- A leaflet listing the contents

- 6 safety pins
Who is responsible for maintaining the first aid kit?
The appointed person or the first aider
How can you control infection?
- Wash hands
- Wear disposable gloves
- Correctly dispose of waste
- Clean the area
- Wash hands before and after treatment, and before putting on gloves
How do you wash your hands well?
- Wet hands (35-45 degrees), apply enough soap to cover or apply a palmful of sanitiser
- Rub hand palm to palm
- Rub hands back to palm and lace fingers
- Link fingers together and rub palms and fingers
- Interlock hands and rub backs of fingers against palms
- Rub your thumbs in closed fists
- Avoid touching the tap once washed - use and elbow or towel
How important is hand washing?
In emergency cases, washing hands may not always be possible; it is best to attend quickly to time sensitive injuries
