Introduction Unit Flashcards
What are the 5 unifying themes of life
- Organization
- Information
- Matter & Energy
- Interactions
- Evolution
Orginization is based on the heirarchy of structure. In what order does the heirarchy go
- Atoms
- Molecules
- Organelles
- Cells
- Tissues
- Organs
- Organ system
- Organism
- Population
- Community
- Ecosystem
What are the 4 properties required for life
- Reproduce
- Uptake / process nutrients
- Excrete waste
- Respond to stimuli
Remember with the acronym ‘RUER’
What are 3 main differences between bacteria and viruses
Bacteria:
- Unicellular
- Structure of a cell
- Reproduce through binary fission
Virus:
- No cells
- Structure of DNA / RNA in protein coat
- Reproduce through invading host cell
What is a positive feedback loop
The production of products will lead to increase production of products
This will eventually lead to negative feedback
What is a negative feedback loop
The accumulation of an end product slows down / halts production of end product
What are 5 main points of darwin’s theory of evolution
- There is variation within population
- Some variations are favorable
- More young are produced than can survive in each generation
- Those that survive and reproduce have favorable variation
- Over time, small changes accumulate, resulting in speciation
What is the phylogeneic tree
The representation of evolutionary relationships through → domain, kingdom, phyllum, class, order, family, genus, species
