Introduction To Waves Flashcards
Vibration
Side to side or up and down motion
Wave
A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another
The matter inside of a wave does not travel
Mechanical Wave
A wave that needs matter to travel through
- Water
- Earthquake
- Sound
Electromagnetic Wave
A wave that transfers energy through a field
- Visible light
- Infrared light
- Radio waves
Field
The area around an object that can exert force
Wavelength
Crest to crest
Amplitude
Middle to top of crest
Frequency
The amount of waves that pass through a certain area during an amount of time
1 wave/10 seconds
Crest
The top of a wave
Trough
The bottom of a wave
Transverse Wave
Waves that travel perpendicularly to the force that creates it
(Mechanical)
Longitude/Compression Waves
A wave that travels in the same direction as the force that created it
(All sound and mechanical)
Area of Compression
The “crest,” of a longitude/compression wave
Area of Rarefaction
Area where the frequency of waves is less on longitude/compression waves
Reflection
The bouncing back of a wave when it hits a barrier
Area of incident, area of reflection
