Introduction to Unconscious Bias for Medical Students Flashcards
What are the differences between the ‘categorical’ and ‘sensibility’ approaches to diversity and give examples of each
Categorical: dealing with each section of the protected equalities bt not addressing them as a whole eg. womens rights, or homophobia, rather than acceptng they all work in flux and so you need to think of everything together, such for gay women, which is the sensibility approach
Catagorical: Learning about groups that are different from one’s own group. This approach views groups as separate and distinct entities, and that all group members are homogeneous. It promotes thinking about individuals as group members rather than individuals
earning to think critically about culture and to view diversity as constantly in flux. This approach focuses on self-awareness and reflection - unless we are aware of our own perspectives on a range of issues, we are poorly positioned to deliver health care equitably to patients of diverse backgrounds. It promotes thinking about individuals as having their own unique identities and requires an intersectional approach.
= Sensibility approach
