Introduction to the skeletal system Flashcards
What prefix is used when referring to bones
os-
What are the functions of bone?
support, protection, leverage, storage and blood cell production
What happens to bones when the blood calcium falls too low
Calcium is released through osteoclast activity
What happens to bones when the blood calcium gets too high
Calcium is returned to bone through osteoblast activity
What are the three kinds of bone cell?
Osteoblast, Osteocyte and Osteoclast
What does an osteoblast do?
It forms bone
What does an osteocyte do?
It maintains bone
What does an osteoclast do?
it removes unneeded bone
What is the matrix of bone made of? What makes it so hard?
Collagen and Ground substance made of protein and complex polysaccharides. calcium and phosphate in the form of hydroxyapatite crystals
What are the main differences between the structures of cancellous bone and compact bone?
Compact - tightly compacted cylinders of bone. Cancellous - randomly arranged spicules of bone.
Why does the body need these two different types of bone?
Cancellous bone for lightness and to accommodate blood cell production. Compact for strength and rigidity.
