Introduction To Sonograpy Flashcards
What is the frequency range for ultrasound?
1-30 Mhz
Who is the father of ultrasound?
Ian Donald
What is real time scanning?
When we have a single frame or image created several times per second to give us the appearance or movement.
What are the different modes of ultrasound?
- A mode
- B mode
- Real time mode
- M-mode
- Doppler (spectral and colour)
What is A mode?
- The most basic form of ultrasound.
- A spike is produced according to amplitude of echo.
(Amplitude mode)
What is B mode?
A method of displaying the intensity (amplitude) of an echo by varying the brightness of a dot to corresponding to strength. Eventually each dot represents a picture in a 2D frame
B stands for brightness
What is Bi-stable
A b mode image represented by either a white or black dot (on or off position). This has no soft tissue differentiation and uses a cathode ray tube for display
What is gray scale?
This is a B-mode image that has many shades of gray
What is M-mode
M mode stands for motion modulation. If a series of B mode dots are displayed on a moving time base the motion of a mobile structure can be seen
What is Doppler?
Using the Doppler equation, the velocity of blood flows or frequency of blood is determined
What is static scanning?
The term came to use after real time scanning was introduced
Static scan, B-scan and articulated arm scan all meant the same.
Contact scanning
Describes the transition from placing patients in a water bath (cattle water feeder) to actually having the transducer touch the patient
What are threetypes of sounds? and provide units of measure
- Infrasound: below 20hz
- Audible sound: 20 hz to 20,000 hz
- Ultrasound above 20,000 hz
What are different types of medical ultrasound?
- Medical ultrasound
- Therapeutic ultrasound
- Diagnostic ultrasound
Medical ultrasound has what types of uses?
Therapeutic or diagnostic
