Considerations for prescription writing

A
  1. Allergies and medication intolerances.
  2. Review other meds for drug interactions.
  3. Advise pt on any modifications to existing meds.
  4. Determine pt specific factors (age, renal/hepatic function).
  5. Determin drug formulations and doses
  6. Educate on adverse and common side effects.
  7. Educate on monitoring parameters and red flags.
  8. Monitor response.

When to review PMP?

A
  • Schedule II: no refills
  • Schedules III-IV: max 5 refills
  • Must spell out quantity to be dispensed (30–>thirty)
  • Include “Partial fill upon patient request” on schedule II prescriptions
  • Provider DEA required for all controlled substances
  • Review Prescription monitoring program
    • All schedule II or III
    • New benzodiazapine prx
