Introduction to Pharmacology Flashcards
Define mechanism of action
A change in biologic function through chemical actions
Define pharmacokinetics
the effects of the body on a drug. Includes absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination
Define pharmacodynamics
the actions of the drug on the body
Define indications
a sign symptoms or medical treatment that leads to the recommendation of a drug
Define contraindications
Anything that is reason for someone not to receive a particular treatment because it may be harmful
Define off-label

Define black box warning
The highest safety related warning a drug can receive
What is the chemical name?
Describes the atomic or molecular structure of drug. Complex and difficult for general use
What is the generic name?
Official name given by FDA. It is assigned by an official body. Often a shorthand version of drug’s chemical name or formula
What is a brand name?
Developed by the company. Usually catchy. When the drug is under patent, marketed under brand name. When off-patent, product can be marketed under either brand or generic. FDA must agree
What is the prototype approach?
Learning a drug that typifys the most important characteristics of the group of drugs. Then, learn the most important characteristics that differentiate the prototype from the variants (other drugs in group)
Define biodisposition
A term sometimes used to describe the processes of metabolism and excretion
