Introduction To Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are the three structures in which a molecule can be represented?
1. Lewis
2. Condensed
3. Skeletal
What are alkyl radicals?
Side chains of molecules
What are the three types of structural isomerism?
1. Chain
2. Positional
3. Functional grouo
What is chain isomerism?
Isomers differ in their carbon skeleton
What is positional isomerism?
Differs in the position of the functional group
What is functional group isomerism?
Differs in the type of functional group
Stereoisomerism?
Compound with the same number and type of atoms bonded to each ither arranged differently in space
Types of stereoisomerism?
1. Geometrical (Cis-trans)
2. Optical
Why does geometrical isomerism occur?
Due to lack of rotation round a C=C double bond as a result of the presence of a pi bond
Optical isomerism?
When a carbon atom has four different groups attached to it so form mirror images of each other but are no superimposable
Enantiomers?
Optical isomers that form mirror images but are not superimposable
What type of carbon is the chiral centre?
Asymmetric
