Group 7 Flashcards
Trend in volatility?
Volatility decreases down the group
Trend in bond strength?
Decrease down the group
What forces are found in diatomic halogens?
Van der Waals
Trend in Van der Waals forces?
Increases down the group
Trend in Mp and Bp?
Increases down the group
The bigger the molecule the bigger the van der waals forces. Why?
Due to the effect of instantaneous dipole induced dipole forces which are stronger due to more electrons in the halogen atoms.
Are halogens oxidizing or reducing agents?
Oxidizing
Trend in oxidizing power?
Oxidizing power decreases down the group. Ability to lose electrons decreases down the group. Reactivity decreases down the group.
Trend in electronegativity?
Decreases down the group (ability to attract electrons to itself)
Trend in ability to accept electrons?
Decreases down the group
Trend in reactivity with hydrogen down the group?
Less vigorous down the group
(H²+X²=HX)
What is thermal stability?
How well a substance can resist thermal decomposition
Trend in thermal stability?
Decreases down the group
Explain the trend in thermal stability?
Decreases down the group due to bond energies. Bonds get longer and weaker down the group due to increased atomic radius. Less energy is required to break them.
Trend in reducing power of halide ions?
Reducing power increases down the group. The ability to donate electrons increases down the group.
