Introduction to Oral Microbiology Flashcards
1
Q
HIV transmission?
A
Body fluids, except saliva which is not infectious
2
Q
What does HIV infect
A
CD4 T cells
3
Q
Describe the HIV
A
- Large ssRNA, enveloped virus
- Reverse transcriptase puts viral RNA into host DNA
- Virions are produced and excreted from infected cell
4
Q
Oral symptoms and signs of HIV:
A
- Acute infection with flu-like symptoms
- Low CD4 cell count
- High plasma HIV RNA levels
- Xerostomia (Dry mouth)
- Candidiasis (Oral thrush)
- Oral hairy leukoplakia (white plaque lesion)
- Kaposi’s sarcoma (Purple lesions)
- Periodontal disease
5
Q
Transmission of Hepatitis B?
A
Body fluid, except saliva which is not infectious
6
Q
Hepatitis B function?
A
- Inflammation of the liver?
- Infects liver cells: dsDNA virus enters, dsDNA does not integrate into host DNA
7
Q
Properties of hepatitis B
A
- Very high replication rate
- Very low infectious dose
- 50% of affected are undiagnosed
8
Q
Hepatitis B vaccine?
A
Only works if body produces anti-HBV antibodies, and needs booster over time
9
Q
Describe Hepatitis C
A
- Inflammation of the liver
- Transmission = blood
- HCV infects liver cells: ssRNA virus infects cells
- 1000x lower plasma number than HBV
- 70% cases develop liver disease
10
Q
Risk from needlestick injury (if patient is positive):
A
- HBV = 23-62%
- HCV = 1.8%
- HIV = 0.3%
