Introduction to Microbes Flashcards
What is bacteria cell wall made of?
peptidoglycan.
lipopolysaccharide.
What is peptidoglycan?
a complex carbohydrate that forms a strong mesh surrounding the cell.
What is lipopolysaccharide?
teichoic acid.
Features of gram positive bacteria?
- thicker peptidoglycan layer.
2. appears purple.
Features of gram negative bacteria?
- thinner peptidoglycan layer
- appears pink
- has second lipid membrane that is exposed to the outside environment.
Features for gram staining?
stain with crystal violet, treat with iodine, wash with alcohol, stain red.
features of flagella?
motility - ability to move spontaneously and actively.
rotate like a propeller.
What is flagella made of?
flagellin.
features of pili/fimbriae?
project from cell’s surface. aid in adherence (ends are like hooks).
what do pili/fimbriae help form?
biofilm.
What is a capsule also called?
- glycocalyx - sugar cap.
- hydrated polysaccharide layer that surrounds the cell.
- provide survival advanatges.
What survival advantages does a capsule provide?
- protect bacteria from drying.
- resist phagocytes.
- molecular mimicry - look so similar to the polysaccharides in the body
- adherence.
