Introduction to Memory Flashcards
Define memory.
Memory is the process of retaining info after the original material is no longer present.
What are the stages of memory?
- Encoding
- Storage
- Retrieval
What is encoding?
Creating a chemical trace in the brain that occurs during presentation of the stimulus. Transforms sensory input into a form that can be registered and stored by the memory.
What are the 3 types of encoding?
- Semantic- understanding the meaning
- Visual- seeing
- Acoustic- hearing
Define storage.
Info holding / retrieving/ retaining
Define Retrieval.
Recovering stored info.
Define short term memory.
This is our immediate memory.
Define long term memory.
Memory of past events. Includes anything beyond STM.
What are the types of long term memory?
- Episodic memory
- Procedural memory
- Semantic memory
What are the two categories that the types of long term memory can be categorised into?
Implicit- unconscious and unintentional memory.
Explicit- conscious memory.
Define episodic memory.
Memories of past events in a persons life.
Define procedural memory.
Action based memory ( hard to break down).
Define semantic memory.
Knowledge based memory.
Define capacity.
How much info can be stored at once - STM 7+/- 2 items.
Define duration.
How long the info can be held for (STM 18-30 seconds).
