Introduction to Kingdom Plantae Flashcards
What defines a plant?
being a eukaryotic, multicellular, photosynthetic autotroph
Gametophytes
multicellular haploid stage formed by haploid spores that have undergone cell division, and produce gametes
Sporophytes
the product of haploid gametes that produces spores which form into gametophytes
Homosporous
produce one type of spore that grows into a gametophyte containing both male and female parts
Heterosporous
produce two types of a spores, a megaspore (female) and microspore (male)
Nonvascular plants
bryophytes; mosses, liverworts, and hornwarts
Vascular plants
plants besides nonvascular that contain vascular systems
Two types of vascular plants
seedless and seeded
Two types of seeded plants
gymnosperms and angiosperms
Gymnosperm traits
“naked seeds” (contained in cones”, single fertilization, and use primarily wind pollination
Angiosperm traits
covered seeds (contained in fruit), double fertilization, and use wind and animal pollination
Two types of angiosperms
monocots and eudicots
Monocots
one cotelydon
Eudicots
two cotelydons
Monocot leaf vein pattern
usually straight
