Introduction to Italy Flashcards

1
Q

Historically, what was Italy’s political situation like?

A

Throughout the Middle Ages, Italy was invaded again and again by other European countries, including Spain, France and Austria. For 300 years, Milan was controlled by the Hapsburg empire. The fragmented nature of Italy meant states often helped foreigners invade as they hated neighbouring states more than foreigners. The battle between France and Austria taking place in Italy only stopped when Italy unified in 1861.
