Introduction to Human Bioscience Flashcards
What is anatomy
Study of body structure and their relationship to one another. Form follows function E.g tissues that LOOK similar often have the same role in the body
What is physiology?
Study of the functions of the body. Focuses of the cellular or molecular level and associated chemical reactions
Superior
AKA cranial
Closer to head or above
Inferior
AKA Caudal
Closer to tail or below
Anterior
AKA Ventral
Front of the body (palms up)
Posterior
AKA Dorsal
Back of the body
Medial
Close to the midline of the body.
Imaginary line down the middle of the body, through the belly button
Lateral
Out to the side of the midline
E.g arms are lateral to the chest
Intermediate
In between two structures
E.g heart is intermediate to the lungs
Proximal
Nearest to the point of attachment to the body
Ankle is proximal to the foot
Distal
Further away from the attachment point of the body
Superficial
Closer to the surface
Deep
Closer to internal
