Introduction to Human Anatomy Flashcards
Define anatomy
Anatomy is the study of the structure of human body parts
and describe their relationships to one another
What are the 5 divisions of anatomy?
- Gross anatomy or Macroscopic (organs and systems)
- Embryology or Developmental Anatomy
- Histology or Microscopic (tissues and cells)
- Living anatomy (radiological anatomy, surface anatomy, applied and clinical surgical anatomy)
- Comparative Anatomy: compares structure of human beings with other creatures especially vertebrates.
What is cytology?
study of cells
what is the anatomical position?
A person standing erect with feet together and eyes forward. Palms face anteriorly with the thumbs pointed away from the body.
what is the language of anatomy?
A language used to describe the relative position of body parts; needed for communication
what is histology?
study of tissues
define anterior
towards the front of the body
what are the other names for anterior and posterior?
anterior- ventral
posterior- dorsal
define posterior
towards the back of the body
what are the other names for superior and inferior?
superior- cranial
interior- caudal
define superior
towards the head
define inferior
towards the feet
define proximal
nearer to the trunk
define distal
away from the trunk
define medial
towards the midline of the body
define lateral
away from the midline of the body
define superficial
nearer to the surface of the body
define profundus or deep
away from the surface of the body
define central
towards the center of the body
define peripheral
away from the central axis of the body
define ipsilateral
of the same side
define contralateral
of the opposite side
what is the anterior surface in the upper limb and the posterior surface in the lower limb
flexor surface
what is the posterior surface in the upper limb and the anterior surface in the lower limb
extensor surface
define palmar surface of the hand
anterior surface
define dorsal surface of the hand
posterior surface
define plantar surface in relation to the foot
lower surface
define dorsal surface in relation to the foot
upper surface
towards the outer border of the upper limb
radial
towards the inner border of the upper limb
ulnar
towards the inner border of the lower limb
tibial
towards the outer border of lower limb
fibular
what is the other name for median sagittal plane?
midsagittal plane
what is the vertical plane passing between the anterior midline and posterior midline, dividing the body into right & left halves?
midsaggital/median saggital plane
what is the other name for parasagittal plane?
paramedian plane
any plane parallel to the median sagittal plane
paramedian/parasaggital plane
what is the imaginary vertical planes at right angles to the median plane?
coronal plane
what is the plane at right angles to both the median and coronal planes; divides the body into superior and inferior portions?
transverse plane
what is the internal chambers that hold vital organs and protects organs and allow them to change in shape and size?
body cavities
what are the two body cavities
- dorsal cavity
- ventral cavity
dorsal cavity is divided into what two cavities?
- cranial cavity
- spinal cavity
ventral cavity is divided into what two cavities?
- thoracic cavity
- abdominopelvic cavity
what are the four abdominopelvic quadrants?
- right upper quadrant
- left upper quadrant
- right lower quadrant
- left lower quadrant
what are the organs contained in the right upper quadrant?
right lobe of liver, gallbladder, right kidney, portions of stomach, small and large intestine
what are the organs contained in the left upper quadrant?
left lobe of liver, stomach, pancreas, left kidney, spleen. portions of large intestine
what are the organs in the right lower quadrant?
cercum, vermiform appendix, portions of small intestine, reproductive organs (right ovary in female and right spermatic cord in male), and right ureter.
what are the organs in the left lower quadrant?
most of small intestine, portions of large intestine, left ureter, reproductive organs (left ovary in female and left spermatic cord in male).
what are the three serous membranes of the ventral body cavity?
- membrane
- visceral
- parietal
a soft, thin, pliable layer of tissue
membrane
covers a vital organ
visceral
lines a body cavity
parietal
what is the membrane name and cavity name of the heart
membrane name: pericardium
cavity name: pericardial
what is the membrane name and cavity name of the lungs?
membrane name: pleura
cavity name pleural
what is the membrane name and cavity name of abdominal organs and systems
membrane name: peritoneum
cavity name: peritoneal
