Introduction To Histology: Cells, Tissues And Organs Flashcards
Define histology ?
The study of the microscopic structure of biological tissues.
Micro anatomy
What are cells?
They are basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms
What are examples of organisms that consist of 1 cell
Bacteria and algae
What is cell theory ?
- All living things are composed of 1 or more cells
2.the cell is basic unit of life - New cells arise from pre-existing cells by dividing and differentiating
What are eukaryotic cells
Cells with cytoplasm and nucleus bounded by nuclear membrane
What are prokaryotic cells ?
Cells which have no nucleus
What are the key parts of the eukaryotic cell
Plasma membrane
Nucleus
Cytoplasm + cytosol
Rough and smooth ER
Golgi apparatus
Cytoskeleton
Lysosome
Mitochondria
What is a tissue?
Groups of similar cells working together to carry out common function
What is parenchyma ?
“Working tissue” that has a function
What is stroma?
Tissue that acts as a scaffold and provides nutrition
What is an organ ?
Made up of several tissues types compromised in a morphologically recognisable structure which performs a specific set of functions
What are the different types of tissue
Connective - protects and supports such as fat, blood and cartilage
Epithelial - covers and lines body surfaces
Muscle-cells contract to generate a force
Nervous- generates electrical signals in response to environment
Describe briefly the extra cellular matrix
The material between cells
How are cells placed in tissue
Most cells are anchored to other cells and structures and joined at cell junctions
What is differentiation ?
The process by which cells adopt a specialised structure and function
