What is health ?
The presence or absence of disease. The ability to maintain your normal role. (A person with an illness does not mean that person can’t be healthy.)
What are the internal variables affecting health?
biologic dimension
psychological dimension
cognitive dimension
What are the external variables affecting health ?
environment
standards of living
family and cultural beliefs
social support networks
What is wellness?
state of well being; positive mindset will breed quicker results, but a negative mindset can hinder the progress (always meet the client where they are at)
What are the 7 components of health?
Physical, Social, Emotional, Spiritual, Environmental, Occupational, and Intellectual
What are the four goals of the Healthy People 2020 initiative?
- attain high quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death
- achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups
- create social and physical environments that promote good health for all
- promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life spans.
What will understanding the patient’s view of health, wellness, and illness allow the nurse to do ?
To create a plan with the patient that stands a chance of working.
What is the health illness continua ?
The health illness continua is used to describe the level of wellness or illness of a person.
*Wellness means having maximum energy while death is having total energy depletion
What are some examples of strategies to promote health across life span
health beliefs physical fitness and exercise oral health nutrition screening normal sleep / rest patterns consumer education
Health Examinations for infants consist of ?
Screening of newborns for hearing loss at 1 month of age, diagnosis by the 3 months, with intervention and treatment by 6 months of age
*physical exams take place at 2 weeks, and at 2,4,6,9 and 12 months
Infant safety consists of ?
- importance of supervision
- car seat, crib with a firm mattress, playpen, bath and home environment safety measures
- no stuffed animals, pillows or blankets in the crib
- position the infant on the back for sleep
- provide toys with no small parts
Health Examinations for toddlers consist of ?
check ups at 15 and 18 months and then as recommended by the primary care provider
*dentist visits starting at age 3 or earlier
