Introduction to GIS Flashcards
Lecture 1
What is Geospatial data?
Where it is
Spatial aspect point that you are interested in.
What is attribute Data?
Tell you what it is.
Gives info about what you are looking at
What is metadata?
Data about data
tells you how and where the data was collected
What is GISystems?
Places emphasis on tools and technology.
A computer system for capturing, storing,
querying, analysing and displaying geospatial data
What is GIScience?
Deals with generic issues
Research on:
▪ Industry standards like metadata
▪ Map Projections
▪ Accuracy
What is GIT?
Includes all types of
computer systems and tools used in processing georeferenced
information, including remote sensing, global navigation satellite
systems, & GIS.
What are the related fields of study ?
- Geography
- Cartography and Surveying
- Photogrammetry
- Remote Sensing
- Geocoding/geo-processing
- Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS – one type is
Global Positioning System (GPS) - IT Infrastructure and Human Resources
What is remote sensing?
Uses satellites & collects info about earth.
Diff satellites collect diff geospatial data.
Satellites send signals to reciever stations which is turned to images.
What is GNSS?
Global Navigation Satellite System
Earth orbiting satellites that provides precise (100 m to sub/cm) location on Earths surface
Why do we use GIS?
- Save money and promote efficiency
- Improve Communications
- Make Clear Decisions - access to more relevant info
- Easily Track Data & Records
What are the components of GIS?
- Hardware -computers
- Software - tools for input, manipulation and output of geographic data
- Data
- Peolpe - operators
- Infrastructure -uses geospatial, attribute and meta data

Brief History of GIS
took off in the 80’s :
Commercial GIS software
cost a lot
early mid 90’s :
graphical interface
affordable hardware and software.
00’s :
Internet and GUI’s
Download with weblinks = speedy
Future:
Integration of remote sensing with GIS and Data Science
According to chang what is a GIS system?
a computer system for capturing, storing, querying, analyzing, and displaying geospatial data
