Introduction to Eurocode 7 Flashcards
Define Eurocodes
Eurocodes are a European suite of codes (e.g. EC1, EC2, EC3, etc.) covering both structural and geotechnical design.
What is the Eurocode dedicated to geotechnical design?
EC7 is the Eurocode dedicated to Geotechnical Design
When was EC7 implemented in most EU countries?
Since 31 March 2010
What is EC7 used for?
- In the UK the use of EC7 is mandatory.
- It is used not only for construction projects in the UK but also in several large construction projects overseas.
What do the annexes provide in Geotechnical Design EN1997-1 Annexes A to J?
In A: recommended partial safety factor values; different values of the partial factors may be set by the National annex.
In B to J: supplementary informative guidance such as internationally applied calculation methods.
What are limit states?
States beyond which the structure no longer satisfies the relevant design criteria
What do the Eurocodes distinguish between?
Serviceability limit states are those involving excessive deformation, leading to damage or loss of function.
Ultimate limit states are those involving the collapse or instability of the structure as a whole or the failure of one of its components.
What must be satisfied in the design of a geotechnical structure?
Both the serviceability and limit states
Define serviceability limit state
States that correspond to conditions beyond which specified service requirements are no longer met.
What are the concerns of serviceability limit state?
The serviceability limit states concern
- Functioning of the structure or structural members under normal use
- Comfort of people
- The appearance of the construction works
What is the serviceability verification?
Ed less than or equal to Cd
Ed → design effect of actions
Cd → limiting design effect of actions
What are the 5 Eurocode 7 ultimate limit states?
EQU: the loss of equilibrium of the structure or the supporting ground when considered as a rigid body.
GEO: failure or excessive deformation of the ground
STR: failure or excessive deformation of the structure
UPL: the loss of equilibrium of the structure or the supporting soil by vertical uplift due to water pressure
HYD: hydraulic heave, internal erosion and piping in the ground
What is the ultimate limit state verification?
Ed less than or equal to Rd
Ed → design effect of actions
Rd → design resistance
What is the factor of safety in the range of?
1.1 - 1.4
What is the formula for calculating design actions Fd?
Fd = γFFrep
