Introduction to Data + Statistics Flashcards
What %(w/v) mean?
percentage ( weight [grams] / volume [millilitre] )
What are angstrom units used for?
These are used two express wavelengths and interatomic distances.
1 angstrom unit depicts 10 to the power -10 OR 0.1nm
What is the dilution factor equation?
volume 1 / volume 1 + 2
How do you work out the final concentration?
original concentration x dilution factor
What is quantitative data?
Values which are numbers.
What is qualitative data?
Values which aren’t numbers.
What are the 2 categories within quantitative data?
Quantitative Variables
Categorical Variables
What does Quantitative Variables mean?
Numbers which mean something in the real world.
Thus, discrete and continuous.
Discrete being numbers and Continuous being ratios.
What does Categorical Variables mean?
Numbers which assign participants to groups.
Thus, nominal and ordinal.
Nominal being types and ordinal being levels.
What can qualitative data include?
- Words / Text
- Photographs
- Videos
- Maps
Taste / Smell / Touch.
What does analysis of data allow?
Analysis of data allows decisions to be made from the data.
- Identifies patterns.
- Assigns a level of probability.
What are the 4 different types of data?
- Structured Data
- Unstructured Data
- Semi - structured Data
- Metadata
What is structured data?
Tabular format (excel spreadsheet) Pre - defined data model Easy to analyse
What is unstructured data?
No pre - defined data model
IE: IMAGES
What is semi - structured data?
Data which isn’t in formal data structure.
Has tags / markers that humans and computers can read it.
