common law jurisdiction- adversarial system
civil law jurisdiction- inquisitorial system
what is law
a system of rules that regulate a community and are enforced by penalties

maintain order and sanction wrongdoing
provide and outlet for resolution of disputes
facilitattes private agreements
establishes and maintains a stable society
regulates the principal bodies of power
what interests does the law protect
individual- tort, property, trusts..
financial- contracts, bargains….
community- peace and security..
state- international law
what is civil law
regulated the relationships between legal persons
purpose is to settle disputes between individuals and provide remedies
what is criminal law
regulates conduct considered to be harmful by the state
purpose is to control and prevent crime
5 sources of law
primary legislation- enacted by parliament
delegated/secondary- law made with authority from parliament
common/case- developed through judicial decisions
equity- principles to supplement common law
EU law- gved legal effect in UK
