Introduction to Control of Movement Flashcards
What do alpha motor neurons do?
Release Ach at neuromuscular junctions to innervate skeletal muscle
What is a motor unit?
A motor neuron and all the fibres it innervates
How does muscle contraction occur?
A motor neuron fires an AP causing a muscle twitch, if firing rate is high enough these twitches fuse to form a continuous contraction.
How can contraction strength be increased?
Employing more motor units
Increasing rate of firing of AP’s
Are smaller or larger motor neurons activated first?
Small
What detects stretching in the stretch reflex?
Muscle spindles
Describe the stretch reflex
1- Muscle stretch is picked up by muscle spindle
2 - Activation of spindle afferents
3 - These afferents make monosynaptic connections with alpha motor neurons
4 - These alpha motor neurons innervate the same muscle causing contraction
What do gamma motor neurons do in terms of muscle spindles?
They maintain muscle spindle sensitivity during muscle contraction by contracting the spindle fibres
Where is the golgi tendon organ found?
The transition between muscle and tendon
How do golgi tendon organs fire?
They fire in relation to the force of contraction
What is the golgi tendon reflex?
It acts to reduce the strength of muscle contraction when the force is high
What are the flexor and crossed extensor reflexes?
Flexion-withdrawal following a painful cutaneous reflex
How do Meissner’s corpuscles effect precision grip?
They detect ‘microslips’, this causes a reflex increase in grip strength
