Introduction to Chemistry Flashcards
What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of the structure and properties of different substances.
What is made of chemicals?
All substances around us are made of chemicals, for example, toothpaste, soap, bugspray.
Who is a chemist?
A chemist is a person who studies chemistry, and has the knowledge and understanding about different substances.
They perform a series of chemical reactions to test how different chemicals work.
Give 5 lab rules when dealing with chemicals:
-Keep long hair tied up.
-Report any breakages/accidents immediately.
-Do not eat/drink in the laboratory.
-Use protective equipment around dangerous chemicals, example: glasses, gloves, coats.
-When heating a test tube, hold it away from peoples’ faces.
What is the Oxidising Hazard Symbol?
Chemicals that can cause fire/explosion when coming into contact with other flammable chemicals. Example: Fluorine, Chlorine.
What are Hazard Symbols?
Hazard Symbols are pictures that tell us that the chemicals we are using might be dangerous to us or the environment.
What is the Toxic Hazard Symbol?
It tells us that a chemical can cause death if swallowed or inhaled. For example: arsenic, lead, mercury.☠️
What is the flammable hazard symbol?
It tells us that a chemical can catch fire easily. Example: kerosene, methanol, ethanol
What does the corrosive hazard symbol mean?
It tells us that a chemical can damage skin tissue. Example: sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide.
What does the radioactive hazard symbol mean?
It tells us a chemical is radioactive, for example, uranium, cesium.
What does the harmful hazard symbol mean?
It tells us that a chemical is harmful. For example: carbon monoxide.
What does the irritant hazard symbol mean?
It tells us that a chemical can cause irritation. Example: hydrochloric acid.
What does the explosive hazard symbol mean?
It tells us that a chemical can explode under the certain conditions. Example: hydrogen peroxide.
