Introduction to anatomy Flashcards
When looking at anatomy what are ‘directional terms’?
Paired terms are used to describe the location of body parts in relation to others
When looking at anatomy what are ‘regional terms’?
Used to describe parts of the body Relating to, situated on or in, near the…
What is the anatomical position?
Used in all anatomical descriptions to ensure accuracy and consistency
The body is in an upright position with the head facing forward, the arms at the sides with the palms of the hands facing forward and feet together

Medial
Describes a structure that is nearer to the midline
Lateral
Describes a structure further from the midline or at the side of the body
Proximal
Nearer the origin of a body part or point of attachment of a limb
Distal
Further from the origin of a body part or point of attachment of a limb
Anterior or ventral
Describes a body part or structure lying to the front
Posterior or dorsal
Describes a body part or structure lying to the back
Superoir
Describes a body part or structure that is closer to the top of the head
Inferior
Describes a body part or structure that is closer to the soles of the feet
Example using the directional term medial?
The heart is medial to the humerus
Example using the directional term lateral?
The humerus is lateral to the heart
Example using the directional term proximal?
The femur is proximal to the fibula
Example using the directional term distal?
The fibula is distal to the femur
Example using the directional term anterior/ventral?
The sternum is anterior to the vertebrae
Example using the directional term posterior/dorsal?
The vertebrae are posterior to the sternum
Example using the directional term superior?
The skull is superior to the scapulae
Example using the directional term inferior?
The scapulae are inferior to the skull

How many body planes are there?
3
Why are body planes used?
Divide the body into sections and are used to help visualise or describe its internal arrangement from different perspectives
What are the 3 types of body planes?
Median
Frontal (coronal)
Transverse
Median plane?
The body is divided longitudinally through the midline into left and right halves
Immaginary line that divides the body longitudinally into right and left halves

What is a sagital section/plane?
Any section made parallel to the median plane
Imaginary vertical line dividing the body into right and left halves, either down the midline (midsagittal) or on either side of the midline (sagittal)
Frontal (coronal) plane?
Divides the body longditudinally into its anterior and posterior sections

Transverse/horizontal plane?
Provides a cross-section dividing the body or body part into upper and lower parts
This can be at any level
Imaginary line slicing the body into an upper and lower part
