Introduction to Anatomy Flashcards
Branch of knowledge concerned with the form, disposition, and structure of the tissues and organs of the body.
Anatomy
Branch of Anatomy that deals with structures large enough to be seen by unaided eye.
Gross Anatomy
Branch of Anatomy that deals with structures seen only under a microscope.
Microscopic Anatomy
(Histology)
Branch of Anatomy that deals with the study of structures of various species of animals with emphasis on those that aid in classification.
Comparative Anatomy
Branch of Anatomy that deals with the study of stages of life from conception to birth.
DEVELOPMENTAL ANATOMY
(Embryology)
Directed to groups of organs that are so closely related in their activities that they constitute body systems with an evident common function.
Systemic Anatomy
Directly concerned with the form and relationships of all the organs present in particular parts or regions of the body.
Regional Anatomy
A surface, real or imaginary, along which any two points can be connected by a straight line.
Plane
It divides the head, body, or limb longitudinally into equal right and left halves.
Median plane
It passes through the head, body, or limb parallel to the median plane.
Sagittal plane
It cuts across the head, body, or limb at the right angle to its long axis, or across the long axis of an organ or a part.
Transverse plane
It runs at right angles to the median and transverse planes and divides the body or head into dorsal and ventral portions.
Dorsal plane
Toward the back of the trunk or toward the corresponding surface of the head or tail.
Dorsal
Lie toward the belly
Ventral
Toward the head
Cranial
Toward the tail
Caudal
Within the head, structures toward the muzzle
Rostral
Toward the median plane
Medial
Toward the side
Lateral
Relatively close to a given part, usually the axis of the body
Proximal
Farther from the axis of the body
Distal
Ventral surface of the manus when describing the thoracic limb
Palmar
Ventral surface of the pes (foot) when describing the pelvic limb
Plantar
Proximity to the surface of the body
Superficial
Proximity to the center of an anatomical structure
Deep
Term used in reference to structures nearest to the long axis of a given part
Axial
Term used in reference to the structures away from the long axis of a given part
Abaxial
Do medical anatomists (human anatomy) make much use of the terms anterior, posterior, superior, and inferior, all of which have very different connotations when applied to quadruples?
True
A cut through the transverse plane.
Transverse section
A cut through the sagittal plane.
Sagittal section
50,000 names have been given to some 5,000 structures
Ambiguity
The international committee on Veterinary Gross Anatomical Nomenclature thru the World Association of Veterinary Anatomists prepared and published on internationally agreed on vocabulary
