Introduction Part 2 Flashcards
What does the CNS include?
-The part of the nervous system enclosed in bone
What does the PNs include
- Cranial nerves
- Spinal nerves
- Peripheral ganglia
T/F Spinal nerves are included in the CNS
F, part of the PNS
What does ipsilateral mean?
On same side of the body
What does contralateral mean?
On the opposite side of the body
What are the meninges ?
The three layers that encase the CNS
–Dura mater, arachnoid membrane and pia matter
Dura matter?
Tough, inelastic matter that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, outer most layer
Arachnoid membrane?
Lied under the dura matter, has a spider-web like appearance and consistnecy
Pia matter?
Thin membrane that adheres closely to the surface of the brain, however is seperated by the CSF
What layer does the CSP reside in?
Between the arachnoid membrane and pia matter, known as the subarachnoid space
What is the CSF?
Contains nutrients, cushions the brains where the brain “floats” inside the space
What are ventricles?
-The CSF filled caverns and canals inside the brain
