Introduction into neurology Flashcards
Nervous system composed of (2 types of cells)
neurons, glial cells
Grey matter
areas composed of mostly cell bodies
White matter
areas rich in axons
reticular matter
areas where cell bodies and axons are mixed
Nucleus
a large number of cell bodies grouped together
tract
a large collection of axons
Four issues with nourishment of the brain
1) approx 2% of our body weight but requires 20% of our blood
2) if the blood supply is interrupted, neurons quickly fail
3) arteries that supply the brain are thin-walled with little muscle
4) blood distribution is centralized from the heart (internal carotid artery which divides into anterior cerebral artery, middle cerebral artery (speech and language)
Stroke
interruption of blood flow to the brain. Very good change it’ll result in speech and language damage (not designed to protect these areas)
Where language is localized
cerebrum (cerebral cortex) – corpus collosum, hippocampus, amygdala, cerebellum (motor control)
