INTRODUCTION & IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGIES IN PARASITOLOGY Flashcards
living together of UNLIKE organism
Symbiosis
what are the three common symbiotic relationship
- commensalism
- mutualism
- parasitism
one specie benefit form the relationship without harming or benefiting the other
Commensalism
example: Entamoeba coli and human
two organism benefiting from each other
mutualism
one organism lives in on another for its survival at the expense of the host
ex: ascaris lumbricoides and human
Parasitism
a parasite, which lives WTIHIN the body of the host
Endoparasite
a term that denotes the presence of an endoparasite
INFECTION
those OUTSIDE the body of the host; those of body surface, skin
ECTOPARASITE
a term that denotes the presence of an ectoparasite
INFESTATION
parasites are classified according to:
- habitat
- mode of living
- duration of infection/infestation
4.pathogenicity
The duration remains on or in the body of the host for its entire life
Permanent
lives on the host only for a short period of time
temporary
needs a host to complete their development
obligate
may exist in a free-living state. May become parasitic when the need arises
Facultative
parasite that established itself in a host where it does not ordinarily live
Accidental/ incidental
