16
Q

dangers of liquid nitrogen

A

extremely cold - -178C
asphyxiation - too much can remove oxygen in air
too much pressure can cause explosions

17
Q

Define element

A

substance which contains only 1 type of atom

18
Q

define compound

A

2 or more elements chemically joined together/combined. They always combine in fixed proportions.

19
Q

define mixture

A

compound made of two or more elements that are not chemically linked.

20
Q

Define solute

A

The substance which is going to be dissolved

21
Q

Define solvent

A

The liquid which is going to do the dissolving

22
Q

define solution

A

The resulting mixture of solute dissolved in solvent

23
Q

define suspension

A

A solid floating in a liquid because it cannot dissolve

23
Q

define saturated solution

A

A solution in which no more solute can be dissolved

23
Q

define insoluble

A

A substance which cannot be dissolved

24
Q

define soluble

A

A substance which can be dissolved

24
Q

Describe a solubility graph

A

The line shows the point where a solution is saturated – the maximum mass of solid which can be dissolved at each temperature.
Above the line, any solute above the maximum mass of solid will be insoluble. The mass that will dissolve can be found by reading off the line.
Below the line, the solution is unsaturated and all solute is soluble.

25
Q

what is solubility measured in

A

g per 100g of solvent.

26
Q

Define atomic structure

A

the number of protons in an atom’s nucleus

27
Q

define mass number

A

the total number of protons and neutrons in an atoms nucleus

28
Q

define isotopes

A

Isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.

29
Q

what is RAM

A

Relative atomic mass (RAM) is the average mass of an atom of an element, taking into account the different masses of each isotope.

30
Q

equation for RAM

A

(abundance/100xmass number) + (abundance/100xmass number) etc for more isotopes

31
Q

name the white solid in the ammonia + HCl reaction

A

ammonium chloride
