Introduction Flashcards
What is developmental neurobiology the study of?
how nervous system and it’ resident cell types form
How is extrinsic information received?
one cell releases a signal that binds to a receptor on another cell and changes its fate
How is intrinsic information inherited?
- daughter cell inherits fate specifying molecules present in mother cell
- asymmetric distribution of fate- determining molecules can make daughter cell with different identities
what are many extrinsic and intrinsic instructions?
proteins encoded by genes
what can differential gene activity explain?
restriction in potency
what happens when a gene is expressed?
gene is transcribed and translated into a protein
Function of enhancer?
activate transcription
Function of silencer?
turn off transcription
Function of transcription factors?
act as complex with other proteins
act on promotors/enhancers to activate or repress the transcription of specific genes
What is differentiation? what is it governed by?
process by which cells become different from eachother and acquire specialized properties.
governed by changes i gene expression dictating proteins synthesised
what is gene expression governed by?
extrinsic factors (morphogens) and intrinsic factors (transcription factors)
