Introduction Flashcards
What is an electric charge?
An electron is negatively charged and a proton is positively charged.
How do we know if matter has a negative charged?
Excess of electrons.
How do we know if matter is neutral?
Matter which contains an equal number of protons and electrons is electrically neutral.
What is the unit of electric charge?
The coulomb. 6.25 x 10^18 electrons make up one coulomb
What is current?
Current is the rate of flow of charge.
Charge can flow in ___, ____, and ____.
Solids, Liquids, and Gases
What is electric current in a metallic wire?
It is the drift of “free/delocalized electrons”. The free electrons are those electrons in the outer shell of the atom, which are not strongly attracted to the nucleus and can, therefore, become temporarily dislodged from their particular atom.
How can current be measured?
The unit in which current (symbol, I) is measured is the ampere (A) and is measured using an ammeter connected in series.
What is charge?
One coulomb is the amount of charge passing a cross-section of a conductor in one second when the current is one ampere.
The charge of one electron is ____ and therefore _____ electrons are required for one coulomb. When a wire conducts at a current of 1A, _____ pass a point in the wire each second.
- 1.6 x 10^-19
6. 2 x 10^18
6. 2 x 10^18
What is the formula for charge?
Q= I x t
Q= charge in \_\_\_\_\_ (C) I= current in\_\_\_\_(A) t= time in \_\_\_\_\_(s)

What is potential difference?
The potential difference between two points in a circuit is the energy transferred per unit coloumb moving from one point to another.
What is the formula for potential difference (voltage)?
V=W/Q
V= potential difference in \_\_\_ (V) W= work done in \_\_\_ (J) Q= charge in \_\_\_\_ (C)
