Introduction Flashcards
Are all pathogens microorganisms?
NO!
- Proins
- Viruses
- Some multicellular parasites
Pathogenic microorganisms (pathogens)
Microorganisms that can cause disease upon colonization of the host
Obligate pathogens
Must infect the host to cause disease in order to multiply and transmit to other hosts
Facultative pathogens
Can infect and multiply in hosts, but ALSO in the environment
Opportunistic pathogens
Do not ordinarily cause disease, but under certain conditions, become pathogenic
MOST FREQUENT IN VET CLINICS
Three types of pathogens
- Obligate
- Facultative
- Opportunistic
Which type of organism is more common?
Pathogenic or non-pathogenic
Non-pathogenic make up 90-95%
Disease
A disorder of structure or function in a host that impacts them, not necessarily from a physical injury
Infectious disease
Disease caused by pathogenic organisms
- virus
- bacteria
- parasites
- fungi
Communicable Disease
Diseases that can be spread between animals
Etiology
Study of the cause of a disease
Infection
The invasion and multiplication of pathogens in an individual or population
Zoonotic
Diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans
Koch’s postulate
4 things
- Bacteria must be present in every case of the disease
- Bacteria must be isolated from the host and grown in a culture
- The disease must be reproduced when inoculated into a healthy host
- Bacteria must be recoverable from an infected host
Five periods of infectious disease
- Incubation
- Prodromal
- Period of illness
- Period of decline
- Period of convalescence
