personality is not static and its processes are organised.

suggests internal storage of patterns –> personality influences behaviour

physical/biological also involved in who we are

consistency uniquely identifying an individual

1) to describe a phenomenon (ie locus of control)
2) to explain phenomenon
3) to make predictions about future
What is the object of personality psychology?
To construct coherent picture of person, study of individual differences, nature of human (how we are all similar)
What’s the 2 ways of developing a theory?
1) deductive: start with theory –> test whether it’s true
2) inductive: data is used to build a theory
What’s the 4 criteria for a good theory?
1) comprehensive (explains various elements)
2) Parsimonious (explains concisely)
3) Falsifiable (able to be tested for correctness)
4) Productive (leads to new ideas)
