Introduction Flashcards
Difference in hospital vs community acquired infections
Hospital: More resistant to antibiotics
Community: Less resistant, but has wider range of toxins, may be more virulent
Microorganism groups
Bacterial
Viral
Fungal
Parasitic
(prions)
Modes of acquisition
Exogenous: involve a pathogen entering a patient’s body
Endogenous: infected with our own bacteria, our own microflora
Congenital: e.g. CMV
Overall goal for antimicrobials
Selectively target prokaryotic over eukaryotic cells
Examples of organisms with high resistance
MRSA
VREs: Vancomycin resistant enterococci
MDR & XDR TB: Multi-Drug-Resitant and eXtensively-Drug-Resitant TB
MRGNB: Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase, Carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae
