what is the prevalence of major depression?

A

most common, among most disabling disease in the world. described as the common cold of the psychiatry world (Rosenhan and Seligman, 1989)

Diagnosis of depression

A

DSM- need to have 5 / more symptoms, such as depressed mood, increase / decrease in weight and appetite, loss of interest/ pleasure, fatigue / loss of energy, insomnia.

what is the aim of the essay?

A

with mental distress and major depression being so prevalent, important to research biomedical views of mental distress as they have been influential in the diagnosis and treatment of mental distress.
Like all models, the biomedical view is not without its criticisms and flaws. This essay aims to address these.
