Introduction Flashcards
What is arterial disease
High blood pressure is eg
Coronary/ischaemic heart disease
Stroke
What is venous disease
Deep vein thrombosis
Pulmonary embolism
What are some structural abnormalities of the heart caused by
Ischaemic heart disease
Disease of heart valves
Disease of cardiac muscle itself
What are some infections that can arise
Infective endocarditis
Myocarditis
What are some modifiable risks of CVD
High bp Smoking Diabetes mellitus Obesity Dietary factors Lack of exercise Excess alcohol
What are some non modifiable factors of CVD
Genetic factors
Gender
Age
What are some symptoms of CVD
No symptoms Chest pain Sudden death Shortness of breath Palpitations Loss of consciousness Collapse Swollen lower limbs Leg pain
What are the components of the cardiovascular system
Heart - the pump
Arteries - passageways of blood from heart to tissues, pressure must be maintained
Arterioles - major resistance vessels
Capillaries - site of exchange of gas, nutrients and water between blood and tissues
Veins - capacitance vessels (contain most of blood volume during rest) passageways of blood form tissues form heart, venous return must provide heart with sufficient blood to pump
