Empirical v.s. Rational
Empirical: symptomatic, treat the signs.
Rational: treat what is causing the symptoms. Treat the source of pain.

Study of drugs including their properties. Actions of drugs on living systems.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption, distribution, biotransformation. Affect of the body on the drug. How body handles the drug.
Pharmacodynamics
Effect of the drug on the normal body. Mechanism of action. Structure/ chemical relationship.
Pharmacotherapeutics
Clinical pharmacology, drugs to treat/prevent disease.
Drug
Any chemical that is capable of altering biological function. Does not add a new function.
