Introduction Flashcards
A microorganism is best described as what?
an organism that is to small to be seen with the naked eye
Germ is a general term that infers what about an organism?
- a rapidly growing cell
What is a major role of microorganisms that are found everywhere?
recycle components and help to fix Nitrogen
What is spontaneous generation?
idea that living organisms can develop from nonliving matter
What in general does Koch’s postulate describe?
these are experimental steps to prove a microbe causes a specific disease
What are Koch’s Postulate?
- same pathogen present in every case of the disease
- pathogen must be isolated from the host and grown in pure culture
- Pathogen from pure culture must cause the same disease in the host when it is injected into another healthy individual
- pathogen must be isolated form the inoculated animal and shown to be the original organism
What is attenuation?
when pathogens lose their ability to cause disease after long incubation periods in cultures
What are chemicals that are produced by bacteria/fungi that work to kill microbes?
antibiotics
Mycology?
Virology?
Parasitology?
- study of fungi
- study of virus
- study of protozoa and parasitic worms
How are microorganisms divided based on comparison of ribosomal RNA genes?
- bacteria
- eukarya
- archae
How many types of microorganisms will we cover in this class? What are they?
> 7
> bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, algae, viruses, multicellular animal parasites
