Introduction Flashcards
What is Microbiology?
The branch of science that deals with micro-organisms
What are the different categories of Microbiology?
Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology, the study of unconventional infectious agents, such as prions
What is Bacteriology?
The study of bacteria
What is Mycology?
The study of fungi
What is Virology?
The study of viruses
Where are microbes found?
EVERYWHERE!!
Are most microorganisms found in nature harmful to humans, animals or plants?
NO!
Where do bacteria and fungi contribute to biological activities?
Soil (ie: nitrogen fixing bacteria)
Water
Alimentary (GI) tract of animals and humans
What is a “frank” pathogen?
Microorganism that causes disease
What are the characteristics of a Prokaryote?
Less than 5 micrometers Membrane bound organelle ABSENT! 70s ribosomes Nucleic acid occurs as a single molecule (often circular) Nuclear membrane and nucleolus ABSENT Replicate by BINARY FISSION
What are the characteristics of a Eukaryote?
More than 10 micrometers Membrane bound organelle PRESENT 80S ribosomes in cytoplasm; 70S in mitochondria and chloroplasts Nucleic acid distributed in chromosomes Nuclear membrane and nucleolus PRESENT Replicate by mitosis
