Q

Why are most large-sized dogs used in research? As models for what?

A

Suitability for surgical procedures. Anesthetic protocols well established, organs an appropriate size for trials of pediatric surgical procedures. Cardiovascular, orthopedic, and transplantation research.

Q

What dog breed is a model of cyclic hematopoiesis? What characterizes this model? What is this model specifically used to study?

A

Gray collies at University of Washington, Seattle. Periodic fluctuations of the cellular components of the blood, most notably peripheral neutrophils. Study basic regulatory mechanisms involved with hematopoiesis, as well as possible treatments.

Q

What dog breed is a model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy? How is the disease similar to that in humans?

A

Golden retrievers. Caused by absence of muscle protein dystrophin, inherited in an X-linked recessive manner, as in humans. Also show similar clinical signs, including debilitating hind limb contracture.

Q

Why has dog use in research declined?

A

Decreased availability, local restrictive regulations, conversion to other animal models, increased cost, and shift in scientific interest from pathophysiology to molecular biology and genetics
