Introduction Flashcards
Statistics
Science of collecting data and using data to learn about things
Statistical Framework
Statistics gives us a framework to answer questions about the world
1. construct a hypothesis
2. collect data
3. Consider evidence
4. draw conclusions
Population
A group of things that we wish to ask a scientific question about
Parameter
Quantifibale attribute of a population. It is often assumed to be a fixed value within the bounds of the population.
-
Census
A complete collection of data for a population.
-Lets us determine the value of a parameter within the population
Sample
Randomly collected subgroup of a larger population
subset of a population
Statistic
is an estimate of a parameter that we get using data collected from a sample
observation
what we are collecting data from and the characteristics are variables
Quantitative Variable
Data that Is stored in the form of numbers and is numerical in the nature
-Continuous data ( Heigh, weight)
-Discrete data ( only specific values allowed ( points in a game) )
- We use mean or average to analyze
categorical variable
variables that are naturally divided into groups
-Binary ( two groups)
-Nominal ( no ordering) eye color
-Ordinal (ordering makes sense) ( grade level)
-We use proportions or percentages to analyze
