Q

Global issue and texts

A

My global issue is the fear of consequences and its effect on people’s ethical decision-making. In order to discuss this global issue, I have chosen the Spanish, late 20th century play’ Death and the Maiden’ by Ariel Dorfman, and the English collection of poems I is a long memoried woman by Grace Nichols from the same era.

Q

Reason for choosing texts

A

I have chosen these as, throughout both of these pieces of literature, there is a great quantity of representation of people taking actions and disregarding any consequences when they believe that their actions are worth it. However, despite this, there is, occasionally, a slight hint of restraint in the characters, which causes them to sacrifice their desires out of fear of what may happen to them if they were to do what they truly wanted.

Q

Thesis statement

A

Both Nichols and Dorfman explore the idea of consequences and their effect on behaviour in order to criticise the irrationality of making decisions on a whim, without thinking upon what will come of your actions.
